Peschiera UNESCO World Heritage Site
Peschiera was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. The 16th-century Fortified Cityhas a characteristic pentagonal structure that includes the historic city center, the Canale di Mezzo, and the start of the Mincio river (previously made navigable by the Romans). Peschiera del Garda has mostly remained intactover the centuries. In fact, the impressive fortifications we can still see today were built by the Republic of Venice between the 16thand 17th centuries, as part of a widespread "Venetian Works of Defence" to protect the Serenissima territories including Bergamo and Palmanova. The fortress was built with innovative techniques for that period and introduced new embankments and bastions at the five corners to reinforce the preexisting medieval walls.
Today, Peschiera is an open-air museum and you can discover its fascinating history thanks to the audio guides made available at the tourist office, leading you on a walking tour of the historic center. To best appreciate the grandeur of the fortress and the spectacular view from above, we recommend a stroll along the ancient patrol walkway that connects the Tognon and Feltrin ramparts. Not to be missed!
